10 Things to do after Installing LUBUNTU 14.04!

This article proposes 10 things you have to do after installing Lubuntu 14.04!

According to (http://lubuntu.net) Lubuntu is a fast and lightweight operating system. The core of the system is based on Linux and Ubuntu. Lubuntu uses the minimal desktop LXDE, and a selection of light applications and focuses on speed and energy-efficiency. Because of this, Lubuntu has very low hardware requirements.

The latest Lubuntu 14.04 is the best lubuntu-edition ever.

I have installed Lubuntu in an old ACER ASPIRE 3020. Its summary is following:
  • Processor Mobile AMD Sempron (tm) Processor 3000+
  • Memory 506MB (284MB used)
  • Operating System Ubuntu 14.10
In order to make a more easy and flexible environment , it is proposed to do the following 10 thing after you have install the core OS.

1: Update and Upgrade

Open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

2: Install extra repos

sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras

3: Install VLC

sudo apt-get install vlc

4: Install Cairo

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install cairo-dock -y

5: Install Faenza Icon Them

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install faenza-icon-theme

6: Install Chrome

open a browser and type

http://www.google.com/chrome/

download linux ".deb" file and install it.

7: Install Dual Monitor Capabilty.

In Lubuntu, multi monitor display settings are not enabled by default. So when you attach another monitor with your laptop for presentation or extended display, nothing will happen. You can take care of that using Monitor Settings, but it does not allow you to layout the displays.

Arandr is a simple visual tool to change the relative position of your displays.

To install it, you will have to open Lubuntu Software Center, and search for Arandr. Simply add it to Apps Basket, and then install it from basket.

8-9: Install and Setup Firewall

To install it, you will have to open Lubuntu Software Center, and search for firewall. Choose Firewall Coniguration add it to Apps Basket, and then install it from basket.

In order to set it up. Just open it from

Preferences  --> Firewall Configuration.

An easy and safe setting will be the profile Public with Reject Incoming connections.
